Miuka sat in front of the woodstove cradling a small bundle of towels cradled in their lap. They’d left the door of the stove open and sweat beaded on their brow from the heat, yet their sole focus was the parcel in their lap. They gingerly adjusted the fabric to check on the swaddled jolleraptor, gently petting her with one finger while still cradling her with the other arm. Her coat had begun to dry and her body no longer felt cool to the touch. While Miuka knew nothing about the tiny creature, they guessed that both of these were good things. Her breathing was steady now as well, slow and deep as if she were sleeping. Though
